What is a Midwife?

A midwife is a specialized medical professional with extensive training in women’s reproductive health, prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. Women who want less medical intervention during their pregnancy and delivery often prefer midwives.

Not only do midwives specialize in facilitating natural childbirths whenever possible, but they also work closely with OB/GYNs, perinatologists, and other health care providers to ensure you get the medical care you need during your pregnancy and labor and delivery — and beyond.

All of the midwives at Women’s Healthcare Group are certified nurse midwives (CNMs). Certified nurse midwives are registered nurses who also complete an accredited nurse-midwifery program, in addition to a rigorous national exam.

Which Services Does a Midwife Provide?

Midwifery services go above and beyond labor and delivery. Choosing a midwife to care for you during your reproductive years and various life stages can involve:

  • Preventive health care screenings
  • Family planning
  • Preconception care
  • Prenatal exams
  • Birthing plans
  • Dietary guidance
  • Fetal monitoring
  • Breastfeeding counseling
  • Making physician referrals

If you’re pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, your midwife also spends quality time educating you on how to manage your own health, as well as how to care for your little one after delivery.

Why Should I Choose a Midwife?

As long as you’re generally healthy and are having a normal pregnancy, you may be a candidate for midwifery services. Having a midwife on your side might be a good option for you if you:

  • Need individualized care and education
  • Prefer to deliver your baby with little medical intervention
  • Want to experience childbirth as naturally as possible

At Women’s Healthcare Group, you can build a trusted relationship with a midwife who works side-by-side with one of the team’s board-certified OB/GYNs. This way, you have access to medical intervention if needed and can feel confident that you’re getting comprehensive care for you and your growing baby. The team works together diligently to provide you with the quality midwifery care you desire, to make sure mom and baby are medically safe.
